Peace, serenity, and economic abundance now surrounds Alexandria; the curse of the Mist has been lifted and all of Gaia’s people are enjoying the calm brought by the rogue efforts of Zidane Tribal and company. Alexandria shimmers in the dead of night – the blade encapsulates the castle’s stronghold as the mightiest defense in all of Gaia flanked by its ruthless female soldiers and Knights of the Pluto whom have metamorphosed as vicious sentinels of peace. While Alexandria is dreaming, one warrior walks its streets, armed with courage and unyielding conviction for the Queen.

“This alley?” General Beatrix spoke in a soft voice, “This alley brings back a lot of horrific memories; Steiner and I dragged the civilians to safety during Bahamut’s indiscriminate attack. The Mist Horrors – putrid and revolting – also made things harder for us to protect Alexandria’s panicking citizens. Even this mighty blade of mine that shows no sign of rusting couldn’t cut through their corrupted mane. Perhaps, it is I that is demonstrating signals of weakness and…”

“Gggh!” Beatrix staggered into a distance. Stands in front of her is a cloaked stranger armed with a menacing trident and posture that can easily intimidate the Goblins of Evil Forest. “I must say that it is very unusual for Alexandria to open its Holy Wings to uneducated vagabonds such as yourself! Show yourself, villain!”

“Is that how you greet a former ally? I must say General, I never imagined that I could take you down with a pathetic lunge like that?” The stranger took of her tarnished clothing, revealing herself as Freya Crescent, a Burmecian dragoon who accompanied Zidane in his journey in liberating Gaia from the accursed Mist. ”

Beatrix confidently stood up from her fall and slowly approached her former comrade. “Freya, I’m aware that you are a Dragoon of the highest level, but using your leaping abilities to greet me is inexcusable. Nevertheless, our short-lived partnership of taking out the Bandersnatches that were chasing Zidane down the castle’s hidden underground labyrinth is the only reason why you are still on you’re feet.”

“Your memory is sharp as your blade, but if memory serves me correct, those Tantalus performers pulled us from a humiliating death at the hands of your former master’s slaves.”

Insulted, The General quickly took out Save the Queen and pointed it at Freya’s throat.

“Never talk to Queen Brahne with such ill-mannered foibles! You know very well that Kuja was behind all the conspiracies that led to her Majesty’s fate! I will never sever my associations with the former Queen. One more assault against her would mean your grave!” Unfrazzled, Freya quickly disarmed Beatrix, throwing Save the Queen to the ground. The confident dragoon looked at the sword, and returned it to its surprised owner.

“Twice at the same night? Is this the same Beatrix that who have struck me down thrice in three different occasions? Honestly, I paid you a visit for a rematch but seeing your frantic disposition makes me uninterested in facing you in a blood duel.”

“So you came here to Alexandria to avenge your loss?” Beatrix slowly turned her back at Freya, hesitating to accept Freya’s bold invitation – “I accept your challenge. Meet me by the castle’s fountain when the clouds turn gray and the goddesses begin to cry.”

Outraged with Beatrix, Freya pointed her trident at the General’s rose-adorned back – “Are you mocking me?! Ridiculing me in front of a cold tempest, which witnessed my agonizing defeat against your wicked blade!” Calming down, Freya’s collected attitude came back, answering Beatrix’s challenge with unrelenting confidence – “When the first raindrop lands, my spear will come howling, resonating the anger that rivals the sound of the thunder!”

Freya’s signature leap left Beatrix alone in the dark alley where horrendous memories culminated as a result of Kuja’s machinations of the Mist. The General consulted her confused feelings, searching for answers, rummaging for reasons. “Freya’s strength… She would have defeated me back then if only…,” Beatrix stopped, waving her long against the cold winds of the night.

Queen Brahne

In the world of Final Fantasy, there are some who were given cinematic eye-candy and drop-dead gorgeous looks in which fans would appreciate for a lifetime. The silky smooth hair, zit-free facial features, glittering eyes and cool victory battle poses to name a few give the likes of Aeris, Tifa, Rinoa, Princess Garnet and Yuna an edge over other venerated JRPG characters. There are some who just stinks and were created so that bloggers like me would have something to write.

Enter the unaesthetic world of under-appreciated Final Fantasy girls (women, widow, cougar you name it) as they radiate unappealing roles and diminished appearance minutes on some of our favorite FF classics. These are the personalities that either made us guffawed upon seeing their looks or pathetic fashion statements or clinched because they remind us of our grumpy old professors. Okay, I’m hiding the adjectives behind this – ugly, unappetizing, disgusting and hideous, that’s what they are and hopefully, my five picks won’t disappoint.

They’re snobbish, they don’t like idle banter and their uncanny ability to break jubilant conversations easily annoy the non-stop jumpy party member. Simply put it that, they don’t want any senseless chatter that would smother their intelligence with innocent laughter and brain-dead strategies; a few select Final Fantasy girls have shaded their perkiness on them and have lived a life of unbelievable mute concentration.

5. Fran (Final Fantasy XII) – A Viera warrior who wields a bow as her default weapon. This mysterious wood-dweller tags with Balthier and has complete control of the Strahl. She speaks very fluently and, most of the time, doesn’t use the power of language to tell the others what she truly feel. Maybe because her ability to sense the Mist and transform into a feral and dangerous Viera already speaks of the trouble ahead. The Silent Viera Warrior of Ivalice

4. Paine (Final Fantasy X-2) – Final Fantasy X-2 may seem a bit congested because of the three characters playing different roles as Spira’s notorious Sphere Hunters. Rikku’s as twice as oblivious, Yuna’s become a Tidus-esque clone and Paine’s a bit a shrug-off, sword-wielding posh girl. Maybe if she weren’t part of Brother’s questionable team of YRP then, she could’ve maintained a more stoic personality than she has portrayed during the first five hours of the game. Still, she puts the trio in place because of her sordid experience way back before Yuna’s pilgrimage. The Quiet and Composed Sphere Hunter

3. Freya Crescent (Final Fantasy IX) – The exceptional Dragon Knight warrior of Burmecia is  a hot-blooded female with a strong sense of responsibility. After being acquired on Disc 1 during Queen Brahne’s invasion of Burmecia, she has vowed to protect her homeland but, drastically failed two times in the hands of Beatrix. The other one was in Cleyra in which, Odin destroyed. She’s always occupied with thoughts about Sir Fratley and the restoration of Burmecia thus, limiting her external interaction with the party. She admittedly confess to Amarant about Zidane’s influence but, over-all, she remained a sturdy and straight-arrow knight deeply concentrated in fulfilling her role as Burmecia’s guardian. The Burmecian Dragon Knight

2. Quistis Trepe (Final Fantasy VIII) – Being hard on herself due to her demotion and being ignored by fellow anti-social Tidus may have given her a hint about being more expletive about herself. Quistis is a very calm and composed female and she doesn’t let her emotions cloud her judgement – fitting qualities of a SeeD trainer though, she lacks leadership potentials thus, resulting to her demotion. Lamenting on Squall won’t solve anything. Case closed.Demoted SeeD Instructor

1. Lulu (Final Fantasy X) – Our winner is strict, straight, cut-to-the-chase mentality and despise childish antics. Yes, Lulu is the perfect definition of stoic – upon arrival to Spira, her cold demeanor always gets into Tidus’s immaturity as the bragging ace blitzball player from Zanarkand and snaps Wakka’s momentum as the cheerleader. Lulu’s got wit and firmly believes that the teachings of Yevon (as agreed also by Wakka) will liberate Spira against Sin. Essentially, Lulu’s just afflicted by her past – she tried cradling her emotions, which she did during the pilgrimage though, losing a boyfriend in the hands of a 1,000 feet monster is something that cannot be erased.
