The Wish You Were Here List

Speaking of missing something, whenever I play a Final Fantasy game, there’s always a touchy scenario of goodbyes from one, or temporary, party member which, in my humble opinion, could’ve took care of hard boss battles in an instant. Here’s some of my two favorite, once-playable Final Fantasy female characters, who for some reasons, had to take their leaves (and die).

1. General Beatrix – One of my favorite parts of Final Fantasy IX was when both Steiner and General Beatrix had to defend a crumbling Alexandria against Mistodons.  Her sword arts, Climhazzard and Shock particularly, easily owned the tentacled intruders. What is special with the most feared, cold-blooded leader of the female Alexandrian soldiers is her non-elemental damage which, does not affect any elemental immunities throughout the short battle. She’s also got the ability to heal and Steiner is lucky (get it?) to have a once-sworn rival by her side.

2. Aerie Gainsborough – Planet Protector, Pulse of Life and Great Gospel? Sure, Aeris can cast restorative limit breaks for the active party and the greatest catch of them all, Great Gospel grants immortality. Imagine using this skill to the three optional Weapons – you could sip on some vodka and play Final Fantasy 7 drunk without formulating some kind of desperate strategy just to stay alive for the next three turns. There’s also a BIG catch (spoilers alert!) – Sephiroth kills Aeris making her unavailable for the next two discs. He could’ve just chosen Cait Sith!

Yeah, when I play IX I wish I could train that whiner Steiner for Beatrix, she is powerful from the get-go and he leaves something to desire till the very end of the game when you get the bigger weapons, not that I use him anyway, he annoys me so much I don’t even put him in my party unless I absolutely have to. . . Aeris is my favorite character of all time, and I had to stop playing VII this last time because I couldn’t bring myself to watch her meet her end. . . it’s just depressing, especially when you go to the trouble to find her ultimate weapon and get her to the point where she can use her final limit break. . . the people at Square definitely know how to make characters that are likable and who give a sense of kinship that is hard to let go of. May you rest in peace Aeris, knowing that you made it possible to save the world. . .
