Lani: The Unsung Final Fantasy IX (Not So) Super Villain
Role-playing games has always been the recipient of unsung heroes and villains who, for the most part, enjoyed little screen success for their roles. I could not think of a better extra than the scintillating bounty hunter who once partnered with Amarant Coral during Disc 2 and her name is Lani.
You still remember her right? She was this brisk female with a huge axe resting on her back who was part of Queen Brahne’s pathetic excuse for a counter-attack against Zidane and the others. She was partially responsible for setting loose Durahan against the party and one of the main reasons why you should ignore the cheap, underhanded back attack (for Excalibur II purposes, you also remember that don’t you?).
The party gets to fight her after out-running Durahan with pendulum axes swinging from left to right. What’s more ridiculous with this encounter is that she’s the only Final Fantasy IX foe that uses Scan – the hell is she going to use that for? Zidane, Vivi, Quina and Dagger easily defeats her and flamboyantly flees the fray after being roughed up by four angry and exhausted Mist Continent denizens.
She re-emerges as Eiko’s captor but Amarant betrays her for a fight against Zidane. That’s it – Lani vanishes from the main story and, she is later seen back on Madain Sari as part of Princess Garnet’s real name mini-game. Numerous Final Fantasy girls played small roles but, I think Lani played the smallest of them all, this suave bounty hunter offered little challenge and her semi-rambunctious attitude is quite entertaining for only a few minutes.
Well, at least she gets her respect after an awkward reunion with Amarant during the end scenes of Final Fantasy IX.
